ROCHESTER HILLS PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER | SPRING 2021 IGNITE YOUR IMAGINATION NEWS & VIEWS A LETTER FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR Oprah Winfrey once said, "Create the highest, grandest vision of yourself because you become what you believe.” This issue of News & Views celebrates the creative spirit within all of us. When individuals visit the library, they are often motivated to learn. They borrow inspiring materials, discover an answer to a question, practice a new skill, or catch up with friends. Each visit to the library starts as a seed of possibility that there is more to know. That seed blooms into knowledge, and we are better for it. Traditionally, libraries promoted learning in the form of text or words on paper. With computers and technology, libraries introduced new ways of learning, from books to eBooks, audiobooks, DVDs, video games, premium online databases, and more. Contemporary educators believe there are four learning styles: Reading and Writing, Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (physical). Today, libraries also embrace learning by doing. It is rooted in maker culture and recognizes the benefits of human curiosity. Patrons are encouraged to tinker and create. RHPL welcomes maker culture in a variety of ways. Our Eureka Lab provides hands-on experience with technology that is often too expensive and complicated to operate at home. Our Youth librarians find ways to keep little hands exploring to learn fine and gross motor skills. Adult Services has a variety of take & make kits this season. Outreach Services demonstrates ways to write in Braille at home in videos posted to our YouTube channel. RHPL welcomes learners of all experience levels and ages who found their niche at the library. Our community thrives when it honors learning and looks beyond traditional formats. LITTLE FREE LENDING LIBRARIES Friends invites patrons, organizations, and neighborhoods to encourage reading by providing a Little Free Lending Library near them. These small wooden libraries offer a free book exchange for children, teens, and adults in a safe, neighborhood setting and are open 24/7. While these little boxes do not replace the public library, they offer a convenient location to pick up a book or drop one off to share. In uncertain times, little libraries promote the joy of reading. Order a Little Free Lending Library, complete with post and installation instructions, for $325.00. A starter set of books is included. The libraries come pre-assembled and may be picked up one to two weeks after purchase. Contact Kim Whitney at whitneykim2347@yahoo.com for more information. WATCH FOR FRIENDS LIBRARY STORE NEWS For many, the Friends Library Store is a favorite place to shop for special gifts and unique finds. We hope you will continue to think of the Friends Library Store when you need a gift or want to treat yourself. Friends members receive discounts on purchases! Watch for the latest news about the store on Facebook, the library's website, and email. Darlene, the store manager, is ready to welcome you in! An interview with RHPL’s Makerspace Specialist, Tierney Czartoski. Good things can come from simple beginnings. In 2016, during a library management meeting, a question about purchasing a 3D printer inspired a big idea. Staff began to research and discover ways the printer could encourage learning at the library. After securing a grant for $5,000 from the Best Buy Foundation, the library purchased a new 3D printer. In 2017, that printer helped launch one of the library's most unique spaces -- a makerspace where patrons engage in creating, learning, and digital literacy. Now called the Eureka Lab, the makerspace has several creation stations to spark imagination and discovery. Tierney Czartoski, a former middle school science and STEAM educator, is the library's full-time Makerspace Specialist. News & Views interviewed Tierney recently about the Eureka Lab to ask how patrons use the space and why it is an asset to the community. How do you describe RHPL’s Eureka Lab, and what is a makerspace? Tierney: RHPL’s Eureka Lab is a place for patrons to build, make, and design whatever interests them. It is a place for patrons to become innovators, engineers, and makers. We named RHPL’s makerspace the Eureka Lab because it is a place that inspires “ah-ha!” moments and where learning new skills takes place with every visit. Late last year, we moved the Eureka Lab to a bigger and brighter space across the room from its original location. What can people create in the Eureka Lab? Tierney: All sorts of projects can be created in the Eureka Lab! Patrons make signs, invitations, 3D printed repair parts for machines, buttons, clothing, costumes, and more. Several small businesses have started in the Eureka Lab. As a result, the library now partners with Grow with Google, which provides online resources to help small businesses grow. A 3D printer in action. What are the various pieces of equipment in the lab? Tierney: The Eureka Lab has so many wonderful items and several new tools that were not available the last time the lab was open to the public. We now have a Wacom tablet, embossing gun, a laminator, animation camera kit, podcasting equipment, a soldering tool, as well as our popular 3D printers and a 3D scanner, a Glowforge printer, button maker, sewing machine, silhouette/Cricut, VHS converter, Makey Makey for kids' computer programming, Raspberry pi for coder dojo, Adobe suite software, a wood burner, and more. Do you have a favorite story about the Eureka Lab? Tierney: Yes! A patron named Amuel came to the Lab in 2018 to use our vinyl cutting and embroidery machines. It took a few trips to the Eureka Lab, but he eventually mastered all of our machines that have to do with clothing creation. He started a clothing line called Animative Collective, which slowly grew an online presence. His line was unique because they were all creations designed and made by him and his expanding crew. Amuel then started taking personalized orders. In 2019, he purchased equipment and slowly outgrew our Eureka Lab. At the end of 2019, he stopped in to tell me that he was moving to Los Angeles to take his clothing line to a bigger facility and pursue his clothing business. It is inspiring to see something that started in our Eureka Lab travel across the country and become bigger! It is also wonderful to see dreams grow into reality in the Eureka Lab. How is the Eureka Lab important to the community? Tierney: I enjoy seeing patrons use equipment and resources they might not otherwise have access to if it were not for the Eureka Lab. Some of the equipment and resources we provide can be costly. Our equipment is free to use, and patrons only need to purchase the materials. It is amazing how many creations have been made in the Eureka Lab that might not otherwise come to life. To learn more about the Eureka Lab, visit rhpl.org/services/eureka-lab or call 248-650-7131. Hours of operation for the Eureka Lab vary depending on RHPL’s COVID-19 reopening phases and protocols.
